Case Study
HISTORY IN THE MAKING

15 years after designing and installing their first kitchen, our client returned to us to rethink their space again.

THE PROPERTY:

This historic old mill situated on the edge of the Lake District was packed with plenty of personality.  It was a great opportunity to create something new and exciting for our clients.

CLIENT BRIEF:

This kitchen, like many other kitchens, is the heart of their home but what makes this different is the huge water wheel encased behind glass at one end.  With such a strong feature the client wanted something simple and traditional, with a nod to its natural surroundings.

OUR DESIGN PROCESS:

After the heading out to the property we were able to see how the space worked within the home and looked for any potential solutions to the space conundrum they now faced.  We looked at several room layouts to see which design worked best with the client and then moved on to develop the materials and schemes.  Our client works a lot from home, based in the kitchen and required a large island with seating for four.

DESIGN FEATURE:

Towards the back of the room we created a country cupboard by bringing forward the wall. This created an excellent space for storing glassware, baking items or kitchen counter appliances that the client didn’t want on show.  Access to this cupboard is quick and easy because we installed simple sliding doors.  In the island is an induction hob with a downdraught extractor and Kholer preparation sink.  There is also a tap with a pull-out hose and instant boiling water Quooker tap.

END RESULT:

This kitchen has 2 ovens. One is a traditional Rayburn oven, which is in keeping with the historic property and the other oven, by Siemens, is built into an existing recess in the wall.  It is equipped with touch screen controls and a pyrolytic cleaning function which burns away dirt by reaching temperatures up to 480 °c.
The worktops are made from granite with a leathered finish which complemented the texture from the exposed brick and stone walls.  The floors made from tumbled limestone which matched the rest of the natural materials used in the kitchen.
